Rugby Road recycling centre opens 8am to 4pm from November to February and shuts on 25, 26 December and 1 January. Van owners must book from 2 January 2027.

West Bridgford’s tip is the West Bridgford Recycling Centre on Rugby Road, NG2 7HX. It is run by Nottinghamshire County Council, not the borough, and it is open every day of the year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Hours change with the season. Right now, in September, it is open 8am to 8pm. From 1 October it closes at 6pm, and from 1 November at 4pm, which is where it stays until the end of February.

The quick answer

  • Hours: 8am to 8pm until 30 September, 8am to 6pm in October, 8am to 4pm from November to February.
  • Closed: Friday 25 December, Saturday 26 December and Friday 1 January only.
  • No booking for cars, but you must register your vehicle first. Vans need a booked slot from 2 January 2027.

Christmas and New Year

The county says its centres are “open every day of the year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day”. In 2026 that means:

  • Thursday 24 December: open, 8am to 4pm.
  • Friday 25 December: closed.
  • Saturday 26 December: closed.
  • Monday 28 December, the Boxing Day bank holiday: the county names only the three days above as closures, so Rugby Road should be open. It is the obvious day for a post-Christmas run, so expect a queue.
  • Thursday 31 December: open, 8am to 4pm.
  • Friday 1 January: closed.

The county has not published anything specific to Christmas 2026. If it changes the hours for Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, we will update this page.

Register before you go

There is no booking for cars, but you must register your vehicle with the county before you use any of its 12 centres. You can register up to two vehicles, and you have to register again if you change car or move house. (Nottinghamshire County Council, using our recycling centres)

Vans: new booking rules from 2 January 2027

This is the big change this winter. From 2 January 2027, residents who own vans will:

  • need to re-register the van;
  • need to book an appointment for every visit;
  • be limited to six visits a year, a count that resets each April;
  • be refused entry altogether in a Luton van, box van, flatbed or anything over 3.5 tonnes.

The booking portal opens in December 2026. Only three of the county’s centres will take van appointments on any one day, with each centre on a rota every four days, so Rugby Road will not be available for a van every day. From 2 January, vans without a booking will be turned away.

The county’s reason is trade waste. It says 2024/25 tonnage suggested Nottinghamshire took in 70% more garden waste, 75% more plasterboard, 86% more rubble and 63% more wood than Derbyshire, at an extra £1.6 million a year in disposal costs. (Nottinghamshire County Council, vans at recycling centres)

Hiring a van is separate. You have to contact the county’s customer services at least 24 hours before the visit and bring the hire agreement. “Man with a van” services cannot use the sites “under any circumstances”.

Limits on DIY waste

DIY waste is free but capped. Per visit, you can bring up to two 50-litre bags, or a single item no bigger than 2000mm by 750mm by 700mm, and no more than four visits per household in any four weeks. For wood from DIY the limit is two bags or two fence panels. If a tradesperson did the work, getting rid of the waste is their legal responsibility, not yours. (Nottinghamshire County Council)

What Rugby Road will not take

  • Car tyres. Not accepted at any county centre. Garages usually take the old ones when fitting new.
  • Asbestos. Not taken at the recycling centres. If you removed it from your own home you can book it into a dedicated site for £140, if you meet the county’s criteria.

Vapes, batteries, knives (wrapped and handed to staff), fridges, washing machines and garden waste are all accepted. (Nottinghamshire County Council, what you can take)

Access and on-site rules

The county lists Rugby Road as having no steps or ramps, which makes it one of the easier sites if stairs are a problem. Children and animals must stay in the vehicle for the whole visit. Sorting your waste into groups before you arrive makes the visit quicker; if you bring a mixed bag, staff will open it and sort it.

Nearest alternatives

The other county centres nearest to Rushcliffe are Beeston (Lilac Grove, NG9 1PF), Calverton (Hollinwood Lane, NG14 6NR) and Newark (Brunel Drive, NG24 2EG). All keep the same hours and the same three Christmas closures.

Still to confirm

  • Any Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve hours change at Nottinghamshire’s centres: we will check in early December 2026.
  • The van booking portal: due to open in December 2026 for visits from 2 January 2027.
